My initial approach was completely wrong. I assumed a subwoofer with a deeper basket would always hit harder. So I ordered a full-depth 12-inch Kicker and built an enclosure to spec—except under a RAM crew cab rear seat, there isn’t enough vertical room for a spec-sized box without eating into cab space. The result: the box was thinner than the sub’s recommended airspace, the sub bottomed out, and I smelled a burnt voice coil three weeks later. $320 for the subwoofer, gone.

Ford F-150 CB Radio Mount: Universal vs. Truck-Specific
I said “universal mount.” The installer heard “it’ll fit anything.” We discovered the mismatch when the radio sat at an angle, crammed against the shifter, two hours before pickup. That’s the kind of communication failure that costs you a Friday afternoon.
Universal CB mounts are designed to sort of fit a lot of trucks, which means they don’t fit any of them perfectly. On a Ford F-150, the A-pillar area has a curve, an airbag cover, and screw holes in non-standard places. A universal bracket means bending, shimming, and hoping.
The comparison:
- Universal CB mount: cheap and usually in stock. Plan for modification time, and don’t expect it to stay perfectly tight on rough roads.
- Truck-specific F-150 bracket: costs more and may take a few days to arrive. It fits the exact contour and mounts in minutes.

How Thick Does Concrete Need to Be for a Car Lift?
This is the question every shop owner asks when a two-post lift arrives. It’s also the question I answered wrong when we poured in 2023.
I assumed that because a residential garage slab is often 4 inches, that would be enough. It wasn’t. The lift manufacturer’s installation manual required a minimum 5 inches of 4,000 PSI concrete with rebar in the anchor zone. The installer looked at our 4-inch slab, took one measurement, and walked—no, he didn’t walk. He said “call me when you fix it” and left. That error cost roughly $2,800 between the cut-out, the repour, and the delay.
According to ACI guidance, a standard residential garage slab is commonly 4 inches thick—but the lift manufacturer’s requirement is the spec that actually governs. Most two-post lift manufacturers call for 4.5 to 6 inches with rebar at the anchors. Don’t let a contractor’s “we always pour 4 inches” be your engineering answer.
- 4 inches: fine for parking a passenger car. Not enough for most two-post lifts.
- 4.5–6 inches, 4,000 PSI, with rebar: what most lift manuals require. Check the exact spec for your model.
In hindsight, I should have read the lift manual before the concrete truck arrived. Pouring thicker the first time would have cost maybe $400 more. Cutting and repouring cost three times that.
What I’d Choose Today
If you’re setting up a shop for Kicker installs, truck accessories, and car lifts, here’s my honest list—from someone who has paid for the opposite choices:
- RAM truck, rear-seat bass: thin-profile Kicker CompRT in a sealed enclosure. Buy the thicker sub only if the box can be built to spec.
- Kicker amp: buy the 2400-watt only if a bigger sub load is on the roadmap within a year. Otherwise, match RMS to RMS.
- Impact wrench: 1/2-inch cordless first. Keep air only if you need it for other tools.
- F-150 CB mount: truck-specific. The extra cost is cheaper than a lost afternoon.
